I want to go home to a house with electricity and heat! but this is apparently never happening.

I am home alone for the first time since Noah was born. Generally I am only separated from him when I leave him home with Adrian to go shopping for an hour or so. Adrian took him to church since my fever is back and I'm dizzy and headachy however I definitely have the urge to disrefard the fact that I'm sick and slip into a hot bath with a glass of wine. Perhaps I'll split the difference and slip into the hot bath with a cup of tea.

Daylight Savings Time

I usually love Daylight Savings time in the fall because I really like to sleep and I get an extra hour. This year however, I was lying on the couch staring at the wall because when you are stuck in bed all day you don't need a lot of sleep.

Third time's a charm..

With any luck my car is all good again (well except for the routine maintenance I'm trying to put off until my maternity leave). Two weeks ago I took it to Wal-Mart to get a new battery and they said it wasn't the battery, it was the alternator...

So I tried a new Mechanic who said the alternator was fine and charged me two hours labor for a battery (which is ridiculous) and then two days later the battery light was back on again...

So today I took it back to my trusted but really expensive mechanic. Apparently it was neither, it was the wire that connected the two. He showed it to me and said he had no idea how someone could have replaced the battery and not realized that the wire was almost completely split. He also managed to get my car back to me in a couple of hours which forced me to call my father-in-law again since he is the only one who gets home early enough to give me a ride over...

Have I every mentioned how awesome my in-laws are? My Dad is fine if you need a little help and can fit it into his schedule but Adrian's parents will bend over backwards for us. My mother would have too if she was alive. As Adrian said earlier, we have a lot to live up to as parents. As far as I know they have never criticized me (only my choice in cars). Its such a fine balance between spoiling your kids and being awesome parents. I don't want to spoil them but I want them to admire us the way we admire our parents. I'm not sure its possible

I had another Baby appointment this morning. Everything seems to be fine. Its odd, in less than 10 weeks I will have a son...another life I'm responsible for, and yes we do have a name but its a secret.

My Library....

I just put aside 4 boxes of books to give away. This is from both of our collections. Anyone who knows me knows this is actually a very small percentage of my collection and mostly outdated science books. I have opened the boxes to find specific books but I have not gone through them since we moved into this house 2 1/2 years ago. I'm trying to clean out my house and part of this is opening the 20-30 boxes we have never unpacked and seeing if we actually need any of this stuff. I decided I do need most of the books but they are now on several $20 Wal-Mart bookcases on the balcony that you can only access from my closet. I'm excited that I can keep my books and use space in my house that we have previously not used. The real question is what is in the rest of the boxes...

And I'm looking forward to rereading some of my favorites...

Near Miss

I was driving down Storrow Drive this afternoon and lost my steering ability. The car was going back and forth across the lanes and the steering wheel was having no effect... After doing two full 360 degree spins I found my car facing on coming traffic and yet I was neither hit nor did I hit the guard rail and my car happened to be facing the exit of a parking lot which I was able to pull into after gunning it across 2 lanes of traffic. I am so extremely grateful that I didn't get into an accident that I didn't really flinch at the $120 it cost to get my car towed to Fitchburg. I will be reaquainting myself with the commuter rail this week and I'm sure I will flinch when I find out how much the repairs cost.

I have been eating a lot of baked potatoes lately because of the stomach problems
I have been having. They are one of the mildest foods I can eat that is not high in chemicals or calories. I know people say bread helps but I think it makes it worse. Potatos are one of the few grains that are not processed and they taste better than brown rice.

The only reason I'm stating this is because I think its amusing that we are such a hygienic society supposedly and yet potatoes and mushrooms are such a staple in our diets. We wash them but they are still grown in the dirt. I refuse to believe that when I'm eating a potato skin that it is not half dirt.

Other Facts about potatoes stolen from random sites....Collapse )

I was sitting in a traffic jam on O'Brien Highway with my window open and suddenly there was a bicyclist in my driver's side with me. A pedestrian had got in his way and he swerved and hit me and then came through my window.
I asked if he was okay, he asked if I was okay and then he took off.
Now my driver's side mirror which cost me $500 to replace a year ago is hanging off again.
I'm always afraid of hitting bicyclclists but there isn't much I can do if I'm stopped in a traffic jam.
Here is my question. Bicyclists ride on the street with cars and are required to obey all traffic laws. Doesn't that mean that if there is a traffic jam they shouldn't be able to weave between the cars? Furthermore what was a pedestrian doing in the middle of O'Brien Highway?
In the past month my car has suffered more bumps and scrapes and yet for every one of those it was in a parking lot or stopped in traffic. I tried so hard to keep it nice....
This is entirely because I just refinanced my car loan this past week. (Although Its actually shorter now and 2% less APR than it was previously.)

(no subject)

Crazy week. I'm back in school but still working 8 hour days and commuting 2 hours each way. So I decided to skip our friends child's graduation party.
I was just reflecting on something that happened yesterday. I was filling out a recipe card for my friend's bridal shower and I was explaining to Adrian that it is a tradition and he wanted to know why no one did it for me which made me pause to think...Somehow I've inherited my mother's reputation. Not necessarily her skills but definitely her reputation. For some reason people seem to think it would be an insult to tell me how to cook.
While I was working at a country club I overheard my uncle tell everyone what to order because I could really cook, my mother was a caterer. Thats not even logical (particularly because at that point my mother worked in his sports store doing embroidery).
If I have a party or bring a dish to yours you can be assured that there is a strong possibility some part of it was already made. My schedule is crazy. Brownies from a mix is a very common dish for me to make (Carolyn, I actually made real ones for your cookout). My freezer is full of spinach pies that my husband can bake while I'm still commuting home. I never make my own pie crust. More of a financial reasoning, but my freezer is stocked full of frozen peppers, onions and spinach so that I don't have to chop fresh. Time is just something I don't have.
Don't get me wrong, I can still cook. I know that if a recipe calls for onions than you have to peel them first. I can follow a recipe the first time and usually get it right because I know how to read a recipe and the basics of cooking. However, I'm not a gourmet cook, I'm just a good cook. I do make my own creations but if I'm not following a recipe there is a possibility it will be a disaster. I rarely waste time on presentation. I can hold my own in a kitchen and make a lot of people happy but if you eat over often there is a limited list that I make for guests...Lasagna, Chicken Piccata, Homeade Pizza, Grilled Meat and veggies, roasted potatoes. I will never be a contestant on that cooking reality show but I will be able to make my family very happy.
